Treating Periodontal Disease in Carlisle

Treating Periodontal Disease

Periodontal, or gum, disease is a chronic infection of the gums and the tissues that support your teeth that stays with you for life. It's caused by mouth bacteria sticking to your teeth and gums. You may be unaware that the infection causes your body to remove some of the bone that supports the teeth. This erosion is generally painless, and because of this most people are unaware that they have it. There are thought to be genetic factors at work, which predispose about 20% of the UK population to extra risk of losing their teeth prematurely through gum disease.

The classic signs of gum disease are bleeding gums, bad breath and tastes, shrinking gums and wobbly teeth. Risk factors which make gum disease more likely to occur or worsen when it's established, include: smoking, being overweight, diabetes, stress and depression.

Treatment of gum disease can save your teeth as long as it is detected soon enough, and of course we check each and every patient that we see. Our hygienists will work with you to clean off the harmful bacteria. Our oral health advice will give you tips on how you can manage risk factors such as smoking and health, and crucially, how your teeth cleaning routines can protect teeth and gums more effectively at home using the right tools.

Our patients with periodontal disease are reviewed and treated every three months and the progress of their disease is carefully monitored using the latest techniques.

The benefit to you? We will help you keep your teeth for life and ensure that you spend as little time as possible in the dentist’s chair. The York Place Dental membership plan is the best way to budget for your preventative and periodontal care.

If you think that you or somebody you know may have periodontal disease, or would benefit from dental hygiene therapy, why not get in touch?
